Obituary
NEWTON — Vera D. Davis, 89, of Newton, died Friday, April
27, 2012 at Kansas Christian Home in Newton. She was a homemaker.
She was born on July 26, 1922 in Erick, Oklahoma to Earl
Lawrence and Lena Mae (Floyd) McDowell. On September 7, 1941 she married Wayman
Phillip Flowers in Long Beach, Calif. He preceded her in death on November 26,
1970 in McLean, Texas.
On March 9, 1972 she married J.L. Allen in McLean, Texas.
They moved to Newton to help her son in lawn and daughter’s airplane ferrying
business at the Newton Airport. He died in a truck accident in 1977 on his way
to the airport. Vera then moved back to Erick, Okla., to care for her parents.
She married Mart R. Davis (Pete) on May 25, 1979 in Sayre,
Okla., and later moved back to Erick where they lived until Pete’s death in 2001.
She relocated back to Newton to live with her daughter and son in law Joan and
David (Mac) McCorkle in October of 2002.
Vera was an active member of the First Christian Church DOC
in Newton where she served as a board member at large, deacon emeritus, a
member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and was in charge of the women’s
welcome center. Vera also was a member of CWF Lydia Group. She was known as
“Grammy” and “GIGI” by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a
voracious and constant reader and loved working cross word puzzles.
Survivors include son, Phillip Flowers (Karen) of Dickinson,
TX. And daughter, Joan (David) McCorkle of Newton, two step daughters Barbara
Davis Hardin of Amarillo, Texas and Shirley Davis Robison of Sayre, Okla.
Sister Bonnie Dunlap of Nicholasville, Ky., 8 grandchildren and 11 great
grandchildren.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, brother’s Kenneth
and Lawrence McDowell, sister Jean Turner and a daughter Phyllis Flowers
Dawson.
Visitation will be at Petersen Funeral Home 215 North Main,
Newton, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday May 2, 2012. The family will receive
friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will also be
on Friday May 4th 2012, at the Rose Funeral Chapel in Erick, Okla. Funeral
service will be 2 p.m. Saturday May 5, 2012 at the First Christian Church in
Erick, Okla. Burial will follow in the Erick Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church or
Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice both in care of Petersen Funeral Home of Newton.
