Obituary
FRESNO, Calif. — Betty Martin passed away on Wednesday
(March 28, 2012) in Fresno, Calif.
She was born to Hubert Wesley and Emily Jessie Moon on April
11, 1926, in Newton. She graduated from Newton High School, Fresno City College
and C.S.U.F. She came to Fresno in 1947 to visit her sister Elaine and stayed,
making Fresno her home. On June 28, 1947, she married Alex Benzler of Fresno.
Together they had two children, David Wesley and Lynn Dorine.
She worked for Fresno County
Library as a senior librarian assistant. She loved to cook, bake and
sew, and she was great at all three. She absolutely adored books, reading,
music (especially the piano), singing, history and current events. She had a
lifelong quest to continue learning.
On Oct. 4, 1986, she married Russell Earl Martin. Together
they enjoyed their vegetable and flower gardens, entertaining, family
gatherings, dancing, The Fresno Philharmonic, traveling and one other.
Betty is survived by sisters, Bonnie Tanski and husband,
Joe, Edith Strain and Elaine; daughter, Lynn Pieper and son-in-law, Karl, and
Russ’ children, Dennis Martin and wife, Carla Filgas, Roy Martin and wife,
Marian, and Sue Karibian and husband, Mike; four grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. She also is survived by nieces and nephews she truly
loved.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russ;
son, David; and nephew, Bronislaw Tanski.
The family would like to thank her extended family at
Carrington Pointe for their love and friendship, especially her very favorite,
Avtar Kaur. We would also like to thank Dr. William Jawien and the wonderful
staff at Cancer Care Associates, Dr. Koi Le and Dr. Lee Copeland, Cyndi Baer
and staff.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Universal
Unitarian Church on 2672 E. Alluvial Ave., Clovis, CA 93611. In lieu of flowers,
remembrances may be made to: Friends of the Library, Valley Public Radio,
Valley Public TV or The SPCA.
