Obituary

Herman Lawrence Toevs went to be with his Lord on Sunday (March 5, 2017). He passed away peacefully, attended by family, at Kidron Bethel Retirement Home. He was born on Jan. 19, 1924, to J.C and Marie Claassen Toevs in rural Whitewater, where he spent most of his working life on the family farm. He retired from farming in 1978 and moved to Newton, where he was a resident for the rest of his life.

Herman married his wife Bertha Mae Dyck on Nov. 26, 1948. Herman and Bert enjoyed very active lives in the community, including being part of the local 4-H, youth leaders at Emmaus Mennonite Church, co-owning Mid-Kansas Bus Service and opening The Breadbasket in Newton in 1984, selling it in 1991 .

Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Toevs; his twin sister, Eleanor; brothers, Kenneth and Arthur Toevs; and his three children: Paul, Janet and James Toevs.

He is survived by his sister, Edna (Eddie) Krehbiel; and two grandchildren, Jason (Shelbie) and Joshua Toevs.

Herman will be missed by his family and the community. A Memorial Service will be at 3 p.m. Friday (March 10, 2017) at Bethel College Mennonite Church in North Newton.

A memorial fund has been set up with Bethel College Mennonite Church.
