Darius R. Gray
Obituary
Darius R. Gray, 98, passed away on Thursday (Feb. 2, 2012)
at Newton Medical Center.
He was born on March 25, 1913, in Hutchinson to George and
Edith (Gordonare) Gray.
Darius served his country as a staff sergeant in the Army
Air Forces during World War II. He served as a radio operator and mechanic from
Sept. 10, 1940, to Sept. 18, 1945. While in the service, he earned many honors
including: Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, American Defense
Service Medal and Bronze Star Attachment, European-African-Middle Eastern
Campaign Medal and Bronze Star Attachment and Silver Star Attachment, World War
II Victory Medal and Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII.
After leaving the armed forces, Darius used his electronic
skills to become a master in clock making and clock and watch repair. His
hobbies he loved to do later in life, continued to be his clock making and
watching KU Basketball.
Darius is survived by his son, Harry Gray of Lawrence, and
his “adopted family,” Rusty, Lisa and Kate Jolliff of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers,
Leo Gray and George Gray.
Darius was a gentle soul and will be missed by many whose
lives he touched on a daily basis.
Graveside committal service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at East
Side Cemetery in Hutchinson. Military honors will be provided by the soldiers
of Fort Riley.
