1927 - 2017

Obituary

Anta M. Krievins, 89, died at Harry Hynes Hospice, Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita on Saturday (March 18, 2017).

Anta was born in Dobele, Latvia on June 5, 1927, to Armins and Antonija (Vilks) Aumalis. At the age of 14, she and her family escaped from Russian occupation of Latvia and fled to Germany, where they were held in refugee camps until the end of the war.

Years later they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1953, she completed her degree in Pharmacy at the University of Nebraska.

On Oct. 10, 1953, she married Arijs E. Krievins in Wichita and worked as a pharmacist at St. Francis Hospital. In 1962, they moved to Newton, where she worked at Hall's Pharmacy, Bethel Clinic Pharmacy and Wilson's Drug Store.

Anta was a very smart, resilient and courageous woman. She was a professional business person in a time when women seldom were. She was a role model to her family and taught and expected her children to be independent. Anta loved to knit and was known for giving hand-knitted socks to family members at Christmas time. She worked hard professionally and in the home to make sure that her family was cared and provided for. Anta and Arijs were long term members of Zion Lutheran Church in Newton.

Anta is survived by her husband, Arijs E. Krievins; children, George and Mona Krievins of Newton, Rita and Randy Sharpe of Lawrence, and John and Janet Krievins of Olathe; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Armins and Antonija Aumalis; brother, Arnis Aumalis; and daughter, Dace Hamilton.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday (March 22, 2017) at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. A public viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials are suggested to Presbyterian Manor of Newton and Harry Hynes Hospice of Kansas.
