Laurinda F. Sump, 89, died on Wednesday (April 6, 2011) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

She was born on Oct. 11, 1921, in Goessel to Dan and Eva (Klassen) Nickel.

She married Ruben R. Schmidt on Oct. 17, 1941, and he preceded her in death. She later married Roy A. Sump on Sept. 15, 1991, and he preceded her in death on August 26, 2006.

Laurinda was a member of Newton Christian Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting, puzzle books and the Gaither Gospel Group. Laurinda looked forward to spending time with her loving family and many friends. She and her family are especially thankful for the care and compassion they received at Schowalter Villa.

She is survived by sons, Melvin Schmidt of Warrenton, Mo., and Calvin Schmidt of Marion; daughters, Shirley and Norman Androes of Pretty Prairie, Edith Williams of Hesston, Donna and Lester Funk of Marion, Linda Roupp of Hesston, and Nancy (Foster) Locke of Hesston; and brother, Lawrence Nickel of Wichita. She has 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Laurinda was preceded in death by her father and mother; two husbands; brothers, Marvin, Norman and Eldon Nickel; and sister, Irma Nickel.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Schowalter Villa Chapel and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, with family greeting friends from 2 to 4 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Newton Christian Church. Pastor Doug Ingmire will preside. Burial will follow in Restlawn Gardens of Memory in rural Newton.

Memorials may be left with Newton Christian Church, Showalter Villa or Hospice Care of Kansas, in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
