Catalina "Katie" Torres, 81, of Newton, died on Saturday (May 14, 2011) at the Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Katie was born on Nov. 25, 1929, in Mulvane. She was raised by Frank and Bertha Martinez, moving to Newton as a child. She married Felix Torres in Newton; he died on Oct. 29, 1985.
Katie had worked several years at Lupe's Carry-Out, El Torro Restaurant, Hurst Egg Factory and Hehr International.
Survivors include her longtime companion, Jose Martinez of the home; four sons, Vincent "Barney" Torres of Newton, Patrick "Gordy" Torres of Newton, Pedro "Pete" Torres of Newton and Alex "Little Groovy" Torres of Wichita; three daughters, Cecilia "Nini" Llamas of Newton, Victoria Torres of Wichita and Rosie "Parchi" Torres of Newton; two brothers, Nick Martinez and wife, Cruz of Independence, and Ray Vargas of Topeka; one sister, Narcisa Martinez of San Bernadino, Calif.; sister-in-law, Carol Martinez of Newton; 28 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Katie also is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Richard Martinez; and sister, Juanita Martinez.
Friends may call from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
