Lujano, Petra

The Newton Kansan

Obituary: Petra Lujano

Petra Lujano, 93, died on Tuesday (March 1, 2011) at Kansas Christian Home in Newton.

Petra was born on Feb. 22, 1918, in Halstead. She was the daughter of Marino and Maria (Regalado) Vasquez. She was one of 11 children.

Petra married Frank G. Lujano on Nov. 25, 1939. They made their home in Newton and were married for 57 years. They had four children: Marino, Bessie, Eloise and Vince. Frank passed away in 1996.

Petra was a homemaker and a hard worker, and she filled her life with many activities. She enjoyed working in the yard and nurturing her flower gardens. She was a longtime member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, in which she had been very active.

She had many friends and enjoyed the time she spent with them and her family. Her devotion to her family and grandchildren was made apparent by her coming to stay with her children and help with the care of each new grandchild once they were born. She loved her husband Frank. They enjoyed traveling, large family gatherings and time with each other.

Petra was a wonderful mother, grandmother and dear friend to many. The family is saddened and will feel the emptiness that her passing leaves. However, they know she rejoices in her reunion with her husband in heaven.

Petra is survived by her daughter, Eloise and Richard Donely of Eagle Nest, N.M.; son, Vince and Donna Lujano of Wichita; daughter, Bessie Harper of Newton; two brothers, Rudy Hernandez of Wichita, and Russell Hernandez of Newton; and three sisters, Jovita Nunez of Newton, Belen Terrones of Newton and Teresa Alvarado of Kansas City, Mo. There are 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Lujano; father and mother, Marino and Maria Vasquez; son, Marino Lujano; brothers; Carlos Vasquez and Robert Hernandez; and sisters, Eldimira Pedrosa, Sally Hernandez and Felicia Hernandez.

Public visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.

The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 6 p.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Newton. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers memorials be made out to Hospice Care of Kansas.
