Obituary: Martha S. McCloud

Martha S. McCloud, 92, of Newton, died on Saturday (March 5, 2011) at Presbyterian Manor in Newton. 

Martha, the daughter of Henry S. and Sarah Flaming Schroeder, was born on Dec. 2, 1918, in Hillsboro (the first baby born in Salem Hospital). Martha was raised on a farm south of Hillsboro, moving with her family to Newton when she was a small child. She graduated from Newton High School in 1937. 

Martha married Leason H. "Pete" McCloud on July 4, 1942, in Salina. While Pete served in the U.S. Air Force, Martha traveled with him. 

After Pete was discharged from the military, they returned to Newton. Pete began to work for Continental Air Lines, which would have the McClouds living in Hutchinson, Dodge City, Chicago and Wichita. After retiring, Pete and Martha moved to Marion, where they lived for 28 years until returning to Newton five years ago. 

Survivors include her husband, Leason "Pete" McCloud of Newton; one son, Michael McCloud and his wife, Cecilia, of Ankeny, Iowa; one daughter, Joan McCloud of Kansasville, Wis.; one brother, Arlo Schroeder of Valley Center; four grandchildren, Tim McCloud, Peter McCloud, Hannah Pothoven and Jennifer Johnson; and six great-grandchildren. 

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; son, Timothy McCloud; brothers, Menno, Pete and Leonard Schroeder; and sisters, Freida Franz, Hilda Evans and Augusta Penner. 

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will receive friends between 7 and 8 p.m. 

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with Strassburg Baptist Church of Marion and the Chapel of Presbyterian Manor. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
