Henry Dolphous Mewborn, 89, a lifelong resident of Newton, died on Sunday (March 20, 2011) at Wesley Hospital in Wichita.
He was born on July 24, 1921, in Newton to Joe and Nancy (Crayton) Mewborn. He was one of six children: sisters, Juanita, Irene, Neva and Mary; and brother, William T.
He attended Newton schools and graduated from Newton High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He enjoyed researching the ships and their military commanders throughout his life. He served as a porter for the Santa Fe Railroad until he retired. He was proud to have served in the military and the railroad.
Henry was a pleasant person to be around. He was a good storyteller and had a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed his many nieces and nephews who referred to him as Uncle Henry. Henry was a resident of the Newton Plaza for 20 years. He always considered the Newton Plaza his home. Henry was a single man his whole life.
Henry spent the last year under the care of his niece, Michelle Williams and her family in Wichita. They enjoyed his many stories and pleasant disposition. He delighted in the many sounds and company of his nieces and nephews while he shared their home. On Sunday, March 20, he was called home to be with his Lord and Savior.
He is survived by his sister, Juanita LeBlanc of Wichita, and many nieces and nephews.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Nancy Williams; sisters, Irene Mewborn, Neva Honeycutt and Mary Jernigan; and brother, William T. Mewborn.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Darryl J. Fox will officiate. A memorial has been set up with the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.
