Obituary: Ida J. Newberry

Ida J. Newberry, 99, passed away on Friday (March 25, 2011) at her home in Newton. 

She was born on Feb. 18, 1912, in Fort Madison, Iowa, to George and Pearl (Stevens) Kendall. 

On Jan. 17, 1931, Ida married Loyd D. Newberry in Argyle, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1991. 

Ida loved flowers, gardening, reading and fishing. She enjoyed playing pinochle with her friends and family. For many years, she participated in league bowling at the Newton bowling lanes. Ida recently received recognition for 66 years as a member of the Order of Eastern Star. 

Survivors include two daughters, Lois Porter and husband, Melvin of Newton and Florence Blankenship of Placentia, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Janis Newberry of Lee Summit, Mo.; grandchildren, Marla Sharp and husband, Morgan of Newton, Valeria Skitt and husband, Rod of Longmont, Colo., Shelley Baker of Centennial, Colo., Doug Porter and wife, Kim of South Hutchinson, Tim Porter and wife, Heidi of Newton, Rochelle Schrowangen and husband, Chris of Coppell, Texas, Brad Blankenship and wife, Jessica of Mayfield, Ohio, Kristi Allard and husband, Kenneth of San Clemente, Calif., and Myles Newberry and wife, Nancy of Sterling, Ill.; 14 great-grandsons; five great-granddaughters; one great-great-granddaughter; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. 

Besides her parents and husband, Ida also was preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin and Robert; one sister, Mary; one infant brother and sister; and two sons, Loren D. Newberry and Alan C. Newberry. 

Friends may call from 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. 

Graveside and interment services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. 

A memorial has been established with the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
