Obituary

Lelyn G. Peters, 71, was born to John and Margaret Hiebner Peters on April 4, 1946 in York, Nebraska. Lee graduated from Aurora Nebraska High School and attended Freeman Junior College, Freeman, SD where he met and married Jessie Miller. They recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with friends and family. They lived in Indianpolis, Indiana where he was in 1-W service and attended Sams Technical Institute. Later they moved to Hesston, Kansas.

He led a full life. Always eager and ready for an adventure. They lived in Hesston, Ks for 37 years. He was employed at Excel Industries. He was a skilled engineer and loved the work as well as teaching others his trade. He served on the Hesston Fire Department and was Chief for 7 years. He loved music and sang in the Kansas Mennonite Men's Chorus for many years and in the church choir. He enjoyed his Goldwing motorcycle riding among the hills of Kansas and later excited about riding in the Rocky Mountains. He enjoyed his friendships with other riders in the Goldwing Road Riders Assn in Kansas and later in Colorado. He said he always wanted to see what was on the other side of the hills in Kansas and mountains in Colorado. He also enjoyed being involved in the National Hot Rod Assn and worked on the Safety Safari at those races in Topeka, Kansas on weekends.

After retiring they moved to Castle Rock, Colorado where their children and grandchildren lived. One way he chose to serve the Lord was by ushering in the church. He touched the lives of many people always willing to help others. He loved visiting with anyone who was willing with a smile, good stories, a joke. He was kind gentle and his positive spirit helped him accept difficulties. He loved his family and thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren attending their activities and games. He was a man of integrity, strength, and loved and respected by many. He will be missed.

His health seemed to decline quickly in the past 6 months. He was referred to Hospice on April 3. He passed away peacefully at his home on May 1.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie, son Eric and wife Kelly of Castle Rock, their daughter Trisha French and husband William French, also of Castle Rock, his younger sisters LaRuth Kramer and spouse Wallace of Freeman, South Dakota, and Marilyn Bell, of DeKalb, Illinois. He has four grandchildren Elijah and Colton Peters and Sophia and Zachary French. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Graydon Peters.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mennonite Disaster Service.
