Fatal accident reported
Jessie Stroup, 28, of Alton died from injuries received in
an automobile accident on First Street, near Ridge Road, Monday evening. The
driver of the other vehicle involved, Bryan Reed, 40, of Hutchinson, was not
injured. However, he was charged with aggravated reckless battery, vehicular
homicide, driving under the influence and illegal transportation of an open
container by the state highway patrol. Sheriff's department reports said Reed
ran a stop sign and collided with the other vehicle.
He was transported to the Harvey County Detention Center.
Formal charges may be filed by the county attorney after a review.
According to sheriff's department reports, a Saturn station
wagon driven by Donald Nickles, 52, of Hesston, was going north on Ridge Road
when it was hit by a pickup truck. The truck, driven by Reed, was going west on
First.
Nickles was transported to Wesley Hospital and is listed in
critical condition.
Stroup was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead
at Newton Medical Center.
Working the accident was the Kansas Highway Patrol, Harvey
County Sheriff's Deputies and Newton Fire/EMS.
