Sylvia V. Schmidt
Sylvia V. Schmidt, 87, passed away Sunday (Oct. 21, 2007) at the Newton Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 9, 1920, in Goessel to William I. and Gertrude (Balzer) Schroeder. In 1940, she married Mike Schmidt at Tabor Mennonite Church. He preceded her in death in 1989.
She attended [Sand] Slate Creek Elementary School and graduated from Goessel High School before attending Bethel College. She was an active member of Grace Community Church in Newton, where she especially enjoyed singing in the choir. She retired from a career at Railroad Savings and Loan, where she retired as vice president of bookkeeping. In her retirement, she greatly enjoyed gardening and photography. She also enjoyed spending time at the Newton Area Senior Center, driving and traveling. She looked forward to spending time with her many friends and loving family. She was warm and unpretentious and embraced everyone she met on her life's journey.
Survivors include a son, Robert R. and Judith Schmidt of Austin, Texas; a grandson, Darren and Sara Truax of Aurora, Colo.; great granddaughters, Madison and Heidi Truax of Aurora; and sisters, Evelyn Balzer and Delores Goering, both of Newton, and Ina Bartel of North Richland Hills, Texas.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Virgil Schroeder; and grandson, Jeff Truax.
Funeral service was today at Grace Hill Mennonite Church; (no it wasn't); with Pastor Dave Reimer of Grace Community Church in Newton officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Sylvia Schmidt Memorial Fund or the donor's choice in care of the Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
