Obituary

Guy R. Schaeffer, 67, died on Thursday (Aug. 11, 2011) at Newton Medical Center in Newton.

He was born on July 1, 1944, in Baltimore to William E. and Mary Jean (Manlove) Schaeffer. On Nov. 6, 1992, he married Mary Alice Wempe (Hemel) in Hagerstown, Md., and she survives of the home.

Guy graduated from St. Mary's of the Plains College in Dodge City. Following college, he returned to Maryland to become the third generation to his father's construction business. He later left the construction business to become the chief building inspector and plans examiner for the city of Rockville, Md. He retired in 2008 after 20 years of service to the city.

Throughout his life, Guy found time and enjoyed volunteering in his community through many organizations including police, fire, EAA and the Elks. He was a founding member of the Ford County volunteer fire department. Among many hobbies and diverse interests, Guy was an aviation and antique car enthusiast and also was an avid sailor.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice of the home; sons, William G. and Amy Schaeffer of New Windsor, Md., and Thomas J. and Kelly Schaeffer of West Plains, Mo.; two stepsons, Adair D. and Corky Hemel of Dighton, and Kegan E. and Danell Hemel of Atwood; and one daughter, Stephanie F. Schaeffer of Arnold, Md. He also has 14 grandchildren.

Guy was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Victor Schuler.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel in Newton. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends following the Rosary at Petersen Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel. Chaplain Denny Bell and the Rev. Jim Mainzer will preside.

Memorials may be left with Kansas Christian Home, Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, Caring Hands Humane Society or KSU Center for Basic Cancer Research, in care of the funeral home.
