Vernon L. Mustoe Sr.

Vernon Lee Mustoe Sr., 76, of Newton, died Sept. 18, 2007. 

Funeral service is at 10 am. Saturday at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Altoona Cemetery in Altoona with full military honors. 

Visitation is from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. Visitation with family is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. 

He was born May 13, 1931, in Russell, the son of Cleon King "C.K." and Fern Stage Mustoe. He grew up in Fairport, about 25 miles northwest of Russell. His father married Madge Homan Mustoe when Vernon was 4. He graduated from Walton High School in 1950, and joined the U.S. Navy on Jan. 2, 1951, serving in the Korean War. He was discharged four years later as a third Class Radioman Petty Officer. He became a supervisor for the New York City Department of Transportation, retiring after 25 years of service. In Newton, he worked in maintenance positions at the local VFW post and at the Elks Lodge. He was past commander and a lifetime member of Wayne G. Austin American Legion Post 2, and was a past member and chef de gare of 40/8. He also was a past commander and lifetime member of VFW Post 971, and was a member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church. 

He married Betty Tilton Almond on June 3, 1994, in Newton. She survives. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Patrick, and a son, Kevin L. Almond. He enjoyed flowers, gardening and yard work. 

Other survivors include his son and daughter-in-laws, Vernon L. Jr. and Donna Mustoe of Staten Island, N.Y.and Susan Almond of Newton; daughters and son-in-law, Vicki and Mark Miller of Newton; sister, Nancy and Morris Meirowsky of Peabody; grandchildren, Jennifer and Gregory Mustoe of New York, Tina and Krista Miller of Newton; Darrel and Doni (Boyer) Kealey of Andover; Mark Boyer of Yucca Valley, Calif.; and great-grandchildren, Ashton Miller of Newton and Mia Kealey of Andover. 

Memorials have been established with the church respite care program, the America's Cancer Society and the American Heart Association in care of Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.
