Obituary

Stanley Thomas Smith, 73, of Dixon, Ill., died on Monday (Dec. 20, 2010) at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. He worked as a dairy specialist for the University of Illinois Coop Extension Service for 33 years, prior to his retirement.

Stanley was born on July 17, 1937, in Newton, the son of Virgil and Elizabeth (Vaughan) Smith. He married Nancy Arnold on Nov. 28, 1958, in Newton. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1962 with a master's degree in dairy science.

Stanley was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Dixon, the YMCA Board during the planning and building phase, the United Fund Board, Dixon Public School Board, Dixon Water Board, Optimist and Toastmaster's Clubs and the Stronghold Foundation Board. After retirement, Stanley enjoyed gardening, and his grandchildren's sports, and musical activities.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Smith of Dixon; one son, Steven C. (Elizabeth) Smith of Bolingbrook; one daughter, Leslie A. (Norman) Knicl of Mahomet; one brother, Vernon (Dwala) Smith of Yreka, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Matthew and Jennifer Knicl, Samantha and Shannon Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kermit and Gordon Smith.

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Preston-Schilling Funeral Home in Dixon. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Dixon. The Rev. David Spaulding will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the First Presbyterian Church in Dixon and the Blackhawk Presbyterian Foundation Stronghold Endowment Fund, 1922 North Illinois Route 2, P.O. Box 157, Oregon, IL 61061.
