Timothy J. Coates, 53, died Sunday (July 18, 2010) at his home in Newton.

He was born on Oct. 4, 1956, in Topeka to Douglas and Lois (Schrooten) Coates.

On May 24, 2001, he married Theresa Schmitz in Newton. She survives of the home.

Timothy was raised in Emporia and graduated from Emporia schools. He was a welder for AGCO Corp. for 17 years. He also was a union steward at AGCO.

Timothy was a member of the Newton Eagles Lodge.

He enjoyed building and woodworking. He recently completed the finish carpentry on a home renovation.

Timothy also enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing. Family was very important to him, and he looked forward to time with his loving family and many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa (Schmitz) Coates of Newton; son, Jeremiah Coates of Walton; daughters, Sarah Coates Horton of McPherson, and Emily Coates of McPherson; grandsons, Jeremiah Coates Jr., and Aiden Horton; and granddaughter, Grace Coates.

He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas Coates; and mother, Lois (Schrooten) Coates.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.

The family will have a time of sharing and greeting following the memorial service at the Newton Eagles Lodge.
