Dorothy Marie Layton

Dorothy Marie Layton, 74, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, died Sunday (March 28, 2010) at her home in Hesston surrounded by family.

She was born on Jan. 30, 1936, in Winchester in Jefferson County, the daughter of Marie Josephine and Howard Andrew Broyles.

On April 17, 1954, she married Melvin Lee Button, who preceded her in death. From this union, three daughters were born: Deborah Marie, Brenda Lee and Terri Lynn. On Oct. 25, 1985, she married Donald Morris Layton, who survives.

Dorothy graduated from Lawrence High School and, following her marriage to Melvin, moved to Hampton, Va., where her daughters Deborah and Brenda were born. Her youngest daughter, Terri, was born following their return to Kansas.

She was employed by Haysville Unified School District for 12 years as an administrative assistant and district business office manager, and for 15 years by The A. C. Houston Lumber Co. in Las Vegas as their human resource director. Following her retirement from The A. C. Houston Lumber Co. in 1997, she moved with her husband, Donald, to Hesston.

Mrs. Layton was active in the Hesston community, serving as a volunteer at Newton Medical Center, as a member of the board of directors for the Harvey County Department of Aging and for the Hesston Area Senior Center. She was a member of Hesston United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Donald of the home; her daughters, Deborah Walton and husband Rick of Wichita, Brenda Groover and husband Don of Newton, and Terri Headrick and husband Kyle of Newton; grandchildren, Liberty Kleeman and husband Larry, Nikki Huntington and husband Adam, Hank Walton and wife Denise, Holly Mies and husband Brandon, Tyler Groover and Emma Groover; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Jordan Kleeman, Laney Mies and Bodie Walton; brothers, Howard Wendell Broyles and wife Shirley, Homer Lee Broyles and Donald Ray Broyles. She also leaves behind many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends.

The funeral service to celebrate Dorothy's life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hesston United Methodist Church.

Graveside services and internment will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Cemetery in Oatville.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hesston United Methodist Church and Hospice Care of Kansas in care of Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
