Alice E. Popham
Alice E. Popham, 84, died Tuesday (Feb. 9, 2010) in
Amarillo, Texas. She was born on Dec. 24, 1925, in Lawrence to George A. Messer
and Philma Randal Messer. Alice was the eighth of 10 children. As a young girl,
she grew up in the Old Soldiers Home in Fort Dodge.
She married William. C. 'Bill' Popham on Aug. 22, 1959, in
Trinidad, Colo. Her husband worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and required them
to move around a lot. Alice and her husband lived in Dodge City, La Junta,
Colo., and Newton before finally settling in Amarillo. She was a devout
Christian and a member of the San Jacinto Assembly of God Church in Amarillo
since 1977. She served as a church pianist and taught children's church for
many years. She wrote and sang Christian songs and volunteered at the Old St.
Anthony's Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, 'Bill' of the home; a
daughter, Debra Baze of Amarillo; a son, Michael D. Popham of Nashville, Tenn.;
two sisters, Audrey Nilhas and Mary Wright of Dodge City; brothers, George
Messer of Douglass, and LeRoy Messer of Nickerson; five grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Burkhart
Funeral Chapel in Dodge City.
Graveside rites will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Maple Grove
Cemetery in Dodge City.
Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery.
