Jean Paulyne 'Grandma Jean' Spain

Jean Paulyne "Grandma Jean" Spain, 86, of Newton, died Tuesday (Jan. 26, 2010) at Asbury Park in Newton.

Jean was born on June 3, 1923, on a farm outside Gypsum, the daughter of Lawrence S. "Lefty" and Elmyrah M. Hall Sloop. She graduated from Newton High School in 1943.

Jean married D. Dean Bahr on Sept. 28, 1944, in Kansas City. They had one daughter, Dean Ann. Her husband died in February 1951.

She had worked in the meat department for Dillons for more than 30 years, primarily in Newton, but for a few years in the 1980s, she worked at the stores in Wichita.

Jean was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newton, the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW, American Legion and Eagles. She also volunteered at the community center.

Survivors include daughter Dean Ann Shelton and husband Bob of Wichita; grandchildren Craig A. Sheffler and wife Nicole of Independence, Mo., Brian K. Sheffler and wife Carma of Seguin, Texas, Lisa Stinson and husband Marc of Andover, and Leslie Arce of Tempe, Ariz.; great-grandchildren Amber, Kirkland, Georgia, Victoria, Gracie, Ethan and Alisaundra Sheffler, Cole and Kyra Stinson, Antonio, Carlos and Josephine Arce; sisters-in-law Arlene Sloop of Shell Knob, Mo., and Barbara Sloop of Newton; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and the 81 Speedway family in Wichita.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother Josephine C. "Dolly" (Richstatter) Sloop; and brothers Gilbert L. Sloop, Larry L. Sloop and Donald L. Sloop.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home as cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton.

A memorial graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Halstead Cemetery in Halstead.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with First United Methodist Church or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
