Elizabeth J. 'Betty' Hurst
Elizabeth J. "Betty" Hurst, 87, of Newton, died
Monday (Dec. 28, 2009) at Presbyterian Manor in Newton. Betty was born on Nov.
11, 1922, in Eureka, the daughter of James and Carrie Whittemore. She attended
a one-room school near Eureka. The family later moved to Newton, where Betty
attended junior high and graduated from Newton High School in 1940. She later
studied art at Phillips University in Enid, Okla. She was married to William
Hurst in May 1942. They lived in Newton and were owners of Hurst Products in
the 1960s and 1970s. He died in May 1992.
Betty was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in
Newton.
Survivors include her twin children: son Stephen Hurst and
his wife Stephanie of Little Rock, Ark., and daughter Susan Hurst of Newton;
two granddaughters, Jane Baker and husband Paul of Newton, and Amy Raprager and
husband Sam of Newton; and grandsons Michael Hurst of Little Rock, Tim Schmidt
of Junction City, and Robert Hurst and wife Jane of Maine.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two
daughters, Ashley Hurst and Gail Hurst; two brothers; and four sisters.
Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Broadway
Colonial Funeral Home in Newton to sign the book.
A graveside memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at
Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
