Gertrude H. Davis
GARDEN CITY – Gertrude H. Davis, 93,
died on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017 at her home. She was born on June 29,
1924 at Oakley the daughter of George H. & Emma (Blevins) Kurtz.
She married Arthur J. Davis on Oct. 2, 1946 at Oakley. He died on
Jan.17, 1962.
Gertrude graduated from Oakley High
School in 1942 and attended Halstead Hospital School of Nursing in
Halstead, graduating in 1945. After her marriage she lived in
Burrton until 1959 when they moved to Garden City. She went to work
at St. Catherine Hospital in the late 1960s beginning as an
instructor for the Nurse Aide program. She advanced on to work as
the evening Shift Supervisor and eventually became the Coordinator of
Infection Control, a program she initiated.
After a short retirement she returned
as Nursing Coordinator and retired again in 1994. She continued to
volunteer at the senior center doing health services until 2008.
She was a member of the First United
Methodist Church and served on various committees over the years,
serving as president of the United Methodist Women four different
times. She was a lifetime member of the Order Of Eastern Star and an
avid gardener and loved to quilt, crochet and embroider.
Professionally she was a Lifetime
Member of the Kansas State Nurses Association and a Member of the
American Nurses Association. In July of 1981 she was recognized as
the Kansas Nurse of the Month and was recognized in Who’s Who in
American Nursing in 1984.
She is survived by her son, Mark, and
wife Doris Davis of Garden City, sister, Twila Wilson of Lincoln,
Nebraska, grandson, Chris and wife Stephanie Davis,
great-granddaughter, Madisun Davis and two great-grandsons, Cyle
Davis and Travin Davis. She was preceded in death by her parents,
husband and grandson, Ryan Davis.
Graveside service was Wednesday at
Burrton Cemetery in Burrton with Rev Brian Faust officiating.
