Chicago on May 15, 1929, to E. Lloyd and Kathryn Murphy Hendry.
At 17 years of age, Donald quit school
and left home to join the world war to stop Hitler. After the war,
his parents had relocated to Newton, where he met and married his
sweetheart, Beverly Mills Hendry. They were married for 49 years; she
passed in 2001.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, his wife's parents, two brothers and three brothers-in-law.
He was also preceded in death by his two adored grandsons,
Christopher D. Schmidt and Jeremy A. Burdick of Hutchinson.
Surviving him is his granddaughter,
Shauna A. Burdick of Hutchinson; two children, Randel R. Hendry
(Nicki) of Wichita and Susan K. Schmidt (Douglas) of Hutchinson.
In his life, he had three children
named after him: one was his firstborn great-grandson, Vance K.
Burdick. He has many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren who he adored, and many children along the
way who he loved like his grandchildren, who also called him grandpa.
He was a very loved and respected man.
He retired from the Department of Corrections, where he worked for 35
years, the last 23 as the head of security.
His Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m.
Thursday (Nov. 16, 2017) at Petersen's Funeral Home, 215 N. Main,
Newton. Leading the service will be Donald's last Pastor that he
loved, Pastor Gary Salmans. He will be buried at the Walton Cemetery,
at Walton, after the service.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to
the Memory Care of Brookdale, Hutchinson, or the wonderful Heartland
Hospice of Wichita, both who offered much love and comfort and will
for other families who need them. Go rest high on that mountain, go
in Love, you will be missed, until we meet again.
