Eunice Unruh

Obituary

Eunice G. (Stanley) Unruh, 94, passed peacefully at Amber Lights Assisted Living facility in Tucson, Arizona on Nov. 21, 2017. Eunice was born Sept. 19, 1923, to Lawrence O. and Bertha (Steinhaus) Stanley in Wallace.

Upon graduation from Wallace High School in 1941, Eunice enrolled in the Halstead Hospital School of Nursing, Halstead. After graduating as an RN in October 1944, she enlisted in the U.S. Army, where she served as a Second Lieutenant at Camp Carson, Colorado, until the end of WWII. While in nurses training, Eunice met and married Raymond Unruh on July 12, 1945. They had three children.

Surviving are Helen Unruh of Juneau, Alaska, Ken and Mary Lisa (Benbrook) Unruh of Tucson, Arizona; three grandchildren: Jeremy, Lisa (Matt) Parker and Erin; and three great-grandsons: Jonathon, Michael and Riley.

Eunice was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Clarence Stanley: two sisters, Vola Powell and Aline Becker; a daughter, Mary Jane (Janie) Unruh on July 19, 1949; and her husband, Raymond Unruh on Jan. 28, 1993.

Eunice and Raymond lived most of their married life in Halstead. Eunice worked at the Halstead Hospital as a nurse, finding her niche in the recovery room, where she remained until retirement. After retiring, they bought the Charlie Wilson farm (where Raymond had worked growing up) and enjoyed years there before moving to Moundridge.

As a couple, Eunice and Raymond enjoyed frequent family get-togethers, as well as taking bus trips with family and friends. They square danced and were active in VFW and American Legion functions. Eunice continued to meet with retired nurses until moving to Tucson.

After Raymond's passing, Eunice continued to live in Moundridge. She enjoyed daily walks, playing cards, lunches with sisters-in-law and traveling. Eunice was always ready for an adventure, with travels that included Cancun, Mexico, a trans-Atlantic trip to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, Disney World, the coastal highway, and many other states and places of interest in Kansas.

She relocated to Tucson's warm, sunny climate, residing at Amber Lights in 2013. Ken, Mary and their children and grandchildren were nearby for support. Helen was just an airplane ride away. Eunice will be forever missed by family and friends.

Visitation will be 10 a.m to noon Monday (Dec. 4, 2017) at Kaufman Funeral Home, Halstead. Graveside services will immediately follow at Restlawn Cemetery, Newton.

Memorials may be sent to the National Kidney Foundation in care of Kaufman Funeral Home.
