Vera (Pohl) Decker
Vera (Pohl) Decker, 83, passed away Thursday (Sept. 17,
2009) at her home in Newton. She was born Vera Bertha Pohl on Oct. 23, 1925, in
Chicago to Ella and Emil Pohl. Vera grew up in Chicago and attended Chicago
public schools. She married Van J. Decker on Flag Day in 1947. He preceded her
in death on Jan. 4, 2007. Van and Vera owned and operated Starlite Skate Center
from 1963 to 1987. During retirement, she enjoyed traveling, bowling, cooking,
crocheting, reading and sewing. She leaves behind her son, Doug Decker and
wife, Carolyn, of Tulsa, Okla.; caregiver and daughter, Susan Simmons of the
home; one sister, Mary Schultz of Wichita; four grandchildren, Marty Simmons
and wife, Amber, of Newton, Tammy Shirley and husband, Don, of Newton, Deanna
Nixon and husband, Jackson, of Tulsa, and Paul Decker and wife, Vanessa, of
Tulsa; and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will conduct a private memorial.
Baker Funeral Home in Valley Center is in charge of
arrangements.
