Juan Lucio Florez Juan Lucio Florez, 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday (Dec. 18, 2011) at the Presbyterian Manor in Newton. John was born on Dec. 13, 1921, in Newton, the son of Lorenzo Sistos Florez and Candelaria Pedrosa Florez. He attended Newton High School and was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He married Raymunda Jaso on June 29, 1946, in Newton.John retired from the Hutchinson Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Co., after 35 years of faithful service. John served in the U.S. Army, 81st (Wildcat) Division during World War II for three years in the Pacific, and he was a member of the Newton American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the N.B.C. Association of Approved Umpires, Amateur Softball Association of Umpires and the Francisco Madero Society.John was an avid sports fan who truly enjoyed the time he spent as an official of softball, baseball and basketball in Newton and the surrounding area.John is survived by his children, Mary and Ernest Fernandez of Prairie Village, John and Barbara Florez of Newton, Carolyn Diana and Rick Moon of Mission; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his sister-in-laws, Luciana Gomez of Overland Park, Katherine Ornelas and husband, Don of Newton, Emma Jaso of Wichita and Marie Jaso of San Antonio; and many loving nephews and nieces.John was preceded in death by his wife, Raymunda Jaso Florez; his parents, Sistos and Candelaria Florez; his sisters, Irene Pedrosa Gomez, Adela Florez; and his brothers, Raymond Pedrosa and Frank Florez.The family is thankful to the staff of Newton Presbyterian Manor and Progressive Hospice for their care and love shown to John.Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Visitation with the family will follow the Rosary in the parish hall of the church from 7 to 9 p.m.Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jim Mainzer as celebrant.Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Building Fund or Progressive Hospice, in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
