Alberta E. 'Bertie' Smurr
Alberta E. 'Bertie' Smurr, 98, died Saturday (Oct. 31, 2009)
at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.
She was born on June 15, 1911, in Baldwin City to Albert and
Rose (Schwartz) Hatfield. They preceded her in death.
On July 8, 1934, she married Eldon Smurr. He preceded her in
death.
Alberta was a longtime active member of First United
Methodist Church in Newton, where she was a member of the Deborah Circle and
United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of the Harvey County
Historical Society. She also was a member of the Progressive Mother's Club and
Birthday Club.
Alberta was an avid KU fan and especially enjoyed
basketball. Family was important to her, and she enjoyed spending time with her
loving family and friends.
Survivors include a son, Mike Smurr of Newton; three
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by brothers, Willy Hatfield
and Ralph Hatfield, and half-sister, Catherine Roberts.
The casket will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at
Schowalter Villa in Hesston. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at
Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8
p.m.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with
Chaplain Nancy Walker of Schowalter Villa officiating.
Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Kansas
in care of the funeral home.
