David Jacob Auernheimer
David Jacob Auernheimer, son of Jacob and Susan Auernheimer, was born at Summerfield, Ill., May 27, 1868. He passed away Sept. 20, 1942, at the Salem hospital in Hillsboro, at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 23 days.
He was baptized in Summerfield in his early youth. He became a member of the Lehigh Mennonite church in 1906 where he remained a faithful member until his death.
He was united in marriage to Mary Ewert Berger at Halstead, Kans., Nov. 7, 1900. They made their first home in Cantonment, Okla., where Mr. Auernheimer was employed in the government Indian store. They moved to a farm north of Lehigh in 1905. In the spring of 1912 he was appointed a rural letter carrier and they moved to Lehigh where they lived until August, 1942, when they moved to Hillsboro. He served as a mail carrier out of Lehigh 21 years and three months. At the time of his retirement he received the following from the postmaster general: "You have the consciousness of having performed your duties to the entire satisfaction of your government. I congratulate you upon your loyal and efficient services."
Mr. and Mrs. Auernheimer were the parents of four children. One son, Samuel J., of Lehigh; three daughters, Agnes who died in infancy, Edna Forbes of Wichita, and Brunhilda Penner of Hillsboro. Mrs. Auernheimer, the three children, her daughter Stella Berger Bahr of Newton, survive, also seven grandchildren, Larry, Mary Elizabeth Penner, Duane Forbes, Virginia Bahr McClure, Dean, Marjorie Lee and Virgil Bahr. Also a daughter-in-law, Norma Auernheimer, three sons-in-law, H. Stanley Forbes, Paul Penner and Lucas Bahr, four brothers, Daniel of Moundridge, Rudolph of Burrton, William of Reedley, Calif., and John of St. Charles, Ill., and one sister Marie of Los Angeles, Calif., and a host of other relatives and friends.
