Mary Jane (Hanna) Bell

Houston, Texas— Mary Jane (Hanna) Bell passed away peacefully at the Treemont Retirement Community in Houston, Texas, Jan. 12, 2015. She was 89 years old.

She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Lloyd Bell, parents John and Ida (Bachmann) Hanna, brothers William Hanna, R.J. Hanna, Thomas Hanna, Terence Hanna and sisters Florabelle (Flo) Hanna, and Delia Ann Hanna.

She is survived by daughter Judy Coronado and husband Jimi of Richmond, Texas, son William Bell and partner Trent Hebert, and grandson Andrew Bell all of Houston, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Jane was born and raised in Newton where she was in the Newton High School graduation class of 1944. She was in the National Honor Society, served on the Student Council for three years, and was Head Usherette her Senior year. During her sophomore year of high school, she got a job with the Santa Fe Railway in Newton in the telegraph office and had a career with the Santa Fe for over 10 years.

She met Lloyd Bell of Longton while they both were working for the Santa Fe in Newton. They were married in 1952 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newton. Lloyd then started a new job with the Taylor Instrument Company and they were immediately transferred to Amarillo, Texas, where they stayed for five years. A subsequent transfer took them to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they lived for another 10 years and had their two children.

In 1967, Lloyd and Mary Jane were transferred one last time to Houston, Texas, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Even though Mary Jane had lived in Texas for more than 48 years and loved it, she never forgot her Kansas roots and in her heart she always considered herself a Kansan.

Mary Jane was very active at her local Houston Catholic Church and school, St. Francis de Sales, for many years where she volunteered for the CCD Sunday School program, cafeteria, and school office. She was one of the St. Francis "Clinic Ladies" who volunteered each week on the school clinic. She enjoyed every minute of being a wife, mother, housewife, chauffer, and everything else related to running a household and raising kids.

Anyone who knew Mary Jane at all knew that there was no bigger sports fan. She loved the Houston Rockets, Houston Texans (and the Oilers before that) and her personal favorite, the Houston Astros. And of course she loved any team from Kansas especially the Kansas Jayhawks and Wichita State shockers. Right up until she passed away, she watched any type of games that happened to be on the TV every night.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 14, 2016) at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. A Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6 p.m. The family will receive friends following the Rosary. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday (Jan. 15, 2016) at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Mary Jane's name to the VFW Post 971 or St. Mary's Catholic School both in Newton.
