Obituary
Edward H. "Ned" Shafar, 88,
died on Saturday (Dec. 9, 2017) at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice-St.
Francis, Wichita.
Edward was born on June 30, 1929, in
Rodman, Iowa, to Fay and Naomi (Hedrick) Shafar. He was the youngest
of 12 children.
Edward attended Iowa schools and was
drafted into the Army during the Korean War. He served his country
for 18 months in Korea.
He married Delta Newberg on Feb. 4,
1950, in Bedford, Iowa. They were active participants in the Square
Dancing Circle 8 and loved being with their family. They were married
for 54 years prior to her death in 2004.
Edward was an owner and operator of a
LeEd Tire. He had many interests and hobbies. He loved watching
sports. He was a big fan of football, especially the Kansas City
Chiefs, KU basketball and any sport in which his grandchildren
participated. He collected metal toy tractors and metal lunch boxes.
He loved his family and spending time
with them. The family would gather monthly to play cards, games and
enjoy one another. He was funny and a good storyteller. He had
nicknames for almost everyone and was an all-around good man. He was
a great father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his children: Deanne
(Terry) Warhurst, Renae (Bud) McLain, Lori (Randy) Hoffman and Alaina
(Dwight) Portlock; two sisters, Bette Priest and Mary Utsler; 10
grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his wife,
Delta Shafar; parents, Fay and Naomi Shafar; four brothers; and five
sisters.
A graveside committal service is
scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday (Dec. 13, 2017) at Greenwood Cemetery
in Newton. There will not be a public visitation or viewing.
A memorial has been established for
Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice of Newton and the American Legion of
