Ethel Hurd McCormick Molzen
Ethel Hurd McCormick Molzen, 90, a longtime resident of
Newton and southcentral Kansas, died Thursday (Nov. 5, 2009) in Raleigh, N.C.,
with her family by her side.
She was born on March 6, 1919, in El Dorado to Dave and Dora
Hurd of El Dorado. On Sept. 1, 1940, she married Harold W. (Pete) McCormick,
who passed away in 1973.
Harold and Ethel moved to Newton in 1949, where they opened
Newton's first Gambles hardware store. During World War II, Ethel worked at
Cessna in Wichita for two and a half years, while Harold fought in the Pacific.
In 1976, Ethel married A. J. (Art) Molzen, who passed away
in 1994.
Ethel resided in Hickory Homes in Hesston from 1997 to 2004.
She moved to the Raleigh area in 2004 to be near her daughter and
granddaughters.
Ethel was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star of Leon for
more than 50 years and was a member of the Rebecca Lodge of Leon.
Ethel is survived by one daughter, Marsha McCormick Schmidt,
her husband, Dennis Schmidt, and two granddaughters, Angie and Shelly Schmidt,
all of the Raleigh area. Ethel also is survived by one stepdaughter, Donna J.
Lehman of Newton, and three step-grandsons.
Ethel had one sister and three brothers, all deceased.
Final resting place will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
