L. Esther White

HESSTON -- L. Esther White, 81, nurse and teacher, died Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

She was born Oct. 14, 1919, to Samuel and Mary (Horst) Kuhns in Manchester, Okla. They preceded her in death. She married Allen White April 16, 1983, in India. He survives.

She graduated from Partridge High School and received teachers training from Hesston College. She taught in a rural school for four years. In 1945, she entered LaJunta, Colo., Mennonite School of Nursing. After graduating in 1948, she worked in Colorado Springs. In 1950 she entered the University of Washington, majoring in public health nursing, and graduated in 1953. She did public health in Seattle until 1962 when the Brethren Assemblies in Seattle sent her to India. She was a nurse in a Christian hospital in Herbertpur, Northern India. After several years as a nurse, the work closed and she did school nursing. She met Allen White in India and they were married. They returned to the United States in 1985. They lived near Peabody and later near Hesston. Her hobbies included plants, gardening, playing Scrabble and writing letters.

Other survivors include: five stepsons, Ivan White of Hesston, Darwin White of Pikeville, Tenn., Donald White of Chevy Chase, Md., Virgil White and Roger White, both of Newton; a stepdaughter, Colleen Hoffman of Elkhart, Ind.; three brothers, Paul Kuhns of Garden City, Stanley Kuhns of Goshen, Ind., and Mahlon Kuhns of Girard; 16 step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by: a brother, Sam Kuhns; and two sisters, Ruth Oien and Magdalene Shirk.

Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today and from 9 a. m. to noon Tuesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton with family greeting friends from 10 a. m. to noon Tuesday.

Graveside service will be 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Catlin Community Cemetery in rural Peabody.

Memorial service will be 3:30 p. m. Tuesday at Whitestone Mennonite Church in Hesston with Pastors Louise Wideman and Mike Bogard officiating.

Memorials have been established with Christian Missions in Many Lands in care of the funeral home.
