Betty J. Schmidt

NORTH NEWTON - Betty Jean Schmidt, 81, died Jan. 12, 2007, at Bethel Home Care Center, Kidron Bethel Village, North Newton.

She was born Jan. 17, 1925, in Osage County, Okla., the daughter of John Franklin and Mary Inez Hoover Banks. She graduated from Galva High School and attended Brown Mackie School of Business, Salina. A resident of North Newton since May 2005, moving from Galva, she was a homemaker, worked for Anthony's Clothiers, McPherson, worked as a secretary for Galva Grade School and the City of Galva, and co-owned and operated B&G Sundries, Galva.

She belonged to Galva Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2715 Ladies Auxiliary and American Legion Post No. 24 Ladies Auxiliary.

On Feb. 14, 1947, she married Glen D. Schmidt in McPherson. He died Feb. 14, 1996.

Survivors include: two sons, Gregory, Machesny Park, Ill., and Tracy, Galva; two daughters, Marilyn King, Hesston, and Teresa Koehn, Minerva, Ohio; a brother, Charles Kirby Banks, Casper, Wyo.; a sister, Bernice Campbell, Wichita; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Empire Cemetery, Galva. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Galva Christian Church, with the Rev. Tripp Edwards presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Galva Christian Church, in care of Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home, McPherson.
