Obituary

Larry Joseph Oberle of Newton passed away of cancer on Monday (Jan. 1, 2018). He was 83. Services will be at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, 1200 Boyd Ave., Newton, KS 67114.

Mr. Oberle was born in Great Bend on March 17, 1934, and was raised on a farm near Claflin.

He graduated from St. Joseph's Military Academy in Hays. He attended Kansas State University in Manhattan and was in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1956, serving in Korea and Japan.

Except for three years working for Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Co. in Pampa, Texas, he worked in the grain elevator business until retiring in 1991. He worked for General Mills, Producers Grain Corporation and Continental Grain Company in Amarillo, Texas; Enid, Oklahoma; Independence, Missouri; Columbus, Ohio; Kearney, Nebraska; and Dumas, Texas. Larry was a manager for TNM&O Bus Company in Amarillo, Texas. He was the driver for the Regal Eagle at the University of North Texas.

Larry enjoyed bicycling, woodworking and gardening. He attended Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton.

He was Roman Catholic and a Third Degree Lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 4621 in Amarillo, Texas.

He married Kaye LeMaster on May 13, 1957, in Pampa, Texas.

Survivors include wife, Kaye Oberle; two sons, Scott (Connie) of McKinney, Texas, and Clark (Stephanie) of Justin, Texas; daughter, Jessie Kaye (James Ontiveros) of Newton; seven grandchildren: Lyndsey of Atlanta, Sarah of Washington, D.C., Jennifer of Buffalo, New York, Susannah of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, Alyssa of Fort Worth, Texas, Colby of Sherman, Texas, and Chase of Justin, Texas; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers: Mark Oberle of Victoria, Texas, Kent Oberle of Midland, Texas, and Rick Oberle of Suffolk, Virginia; and two sisters, Sr. Zita Oberle of Wichita and Doris Griffin of Overland Park.

He was preceded in death by a sister, JoAnn Winkler of Great Bend.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday (Jan. 5, 2018) at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, with Pastor Donna Voteau presiding. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be 7 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 4, 2018) at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church and the family will receive friends following the Rosary.
