Obituary
Virginia L. Payne, 87, died Tuesday
(Jan. 2, 2018) at Newton Presbyterian Manor in Newton. She was born
Feb. 2, 1930, in St. Paul to Charles and Vera (Mudd) Groner. On July
1, 1950, she married Claude "Tony" Payne at St. Paul and he
preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1988.
Virginia was a long-time Newton
resident and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newton. She
worked many years as a supply clerk in both the former Axtell
Hospital and Newton Medical Center. She enjoyed her work and made
many friends at the hospital.
Sewing and puzzles kept Virginia busy
in her free time, as did her love of walking. Virginia could often be
found out on her walks, enjoying her neighborhood. Family was
important to Virginia and she looked forward to spending time with
her loving family and many friends. She especially enjoyed car trips
and exploring new places with her family.
Virginia's family would like to share a
special thank you to the staff of Newton Presbyterian Manor and Harry
Hynes Memorial Hospice for their tender care in mother's final days.
It was greatly appreciated.
She is survived by her daughters, Gail
Gilchrist and her husband Ron of North Newton and Carla Regehr and
her husband Ron of Kechi; son, Gary Payne of Newton; sister, Lou
Piotrowski of Fort Scott; and brother, Warren Groner of Girard. She
is also survived by three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Virginia is preceded in death by her
parents and husband.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday
(Jan. 9, 2018) at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with The Reverend
Nicholas Voelker presiding. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will
precede Mass at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the St.
Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Newton. Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m.
Monday (Jan. 8, 2018) at Petersen Funeral Home.
