Verbena Claassen
Obituary
Verbena E. Claassen, 95, of Whitewater,
passed Tuesday (Jan. 23, 2018) at Wheat State Manor in Whitewater.
Verbena was born May 30, 1922, in Goltry, Oklahoma, to Jacob T. and
Eva (Unruh) Wedel. Verbena graduated from high school in Goltry and
attended Oklahoma Bible Academy in Meno, Oklahoma, where she met her
future husband, Don.
Verbena and Donald (Don) Claassen were
married June 7, 1943, in Whitewater. She and Don started their life
together on a farm near Potwin and later they moved to a farm near
Whitewater, where they resided for many years before moving to
Whitewater.
Verbena was very active in the
community and in her church and was known for her crocheting of
angels and doilies that were given to family and as gifts, and also
sweaters and baby caps that were sent to third world countries. She
had crocheted 430 sweaters and 100 baby caps by January 2018. Verbena
also worked at the Potwin Meat Locker and Whitewater Meat Locker.
Verbena is survived by her daughters,
Donna and husband Rich Wilton of Hastings, Nebraska, and Janelle
Queen of Hastings; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; the
upcoming birth of another great-grandchild and a
great-great-grandchild; her sister, Rosalie Glidewell of Lincoln,
Arkansas; sister in-laws, Martha Claassen of Mountain Lake,
Minnesota, and Evelyn Wedel of Wichita; and several nieces and
nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents;
husband, Donald (Don); four brothers; and two sisters.
Services for Verbena will be held at
10:30 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2018) at Whitewater Community Church in
Whitewater, with burial to be held prior to the service at 9:30 a.m.
at Swiss Cemetery, also in Whitewater. Visitation will be held from 5
to 8 p.m. Monday (Jan. 29, 2018) at the church.
