Eli Walter
Obituary
Eli J. Walter, 96, of Newton, went to
be with Jesus on Saturday (Jan. 20, 2018) at Presbyterian Manor in
Newton. Eli was born Jan. 9, 1922, in Hitchcock, South Dakota, to Joe
M. and Susie (Hofer) Walter. He was the second oldest of 10 children.
Eli graduated from high school in Yale,
South Dakota, and after two years of college he joined the Army,
serving in the Air Corps, where he was a fighter pilot during WWII.
Eli later graduated from Huron College in South Dakota and St. Paul
Bible Institute.
Eli was a founding teacher at Sunshine
Bible Academy in Miller, South Dakota, taught for eight years at
Central Christian High School in Hutchinson, taught at Kansas
Industrial Reformatory for one year and taught at Berean Academy in
Elbing for 25 years. Eli also was interim pastor of Crestview Bible
Church in Hutchinson and served as pastor of Orchard Park Mennonite
Brethren Church in Hutchinson for seven years.
Eli is survived by his wife, Adeline
(Wipf) Walter. They were married in 1945 in Huron, South Dakota.
Survivors also include his three children: daughter, Kathie (Jack)
Girst of Hutchinson and sons, Randy (Judy) Walter of Hutchinson and
Daryl (Diane) Walter of Newton; seven grandchildren; 13
great-grandchildren; one brother; and four sisters.
Preceding Eli in death are his parents;
three sisters; and one brother.
Services for Eli will be held on Monday
(Jan. 29, 2018), with burial at 9:45 a.m. at Swiss Cemetery and the
memorial service following burial at 10:30 a.m. at Whitewater
Community Church in Whitewater. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7
p.m. Sunday (Jan. 28, 2018) at the church.
