Little Child Dies From Acid Burns

Disinfectant Causes Death of Baby -Mother Ill In Hospital

The Kansan received the news this morning of the most pathetic death of little Eleanor Devorraux which had occurred Thursday afternoon at 12:15 at Bethel Hospital and resulted from drinking carbolic acid solution on Tuesday afternoon.

The little tot was at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Devorraux, as her mother is ill at Bethel Hospital.  The Devorraux family had had the influenza illness and had been using the carbolic acid as a disinfectant, and had placed the cup containing the solution back of a picture which was on a shelf, so that the active little hands might not find it.  Little Eleanor climbed up on a chair and pulled a dolly on which the picture was placed which brought the cup into view, then she drank some of the contents of the cup receiving bad burns.  Pneumonia developed and her life could not be saved.  The death is particularly sad for the grandmother who had endeavored to place everything out of the reach of the child that might be harmful and to the mother who has been uite ill of influenza.  The only other child is Evelyn aged four years.

The funeral service will be held at the home of the grandparents at 324 West South Third street Saturday afternoon at 2:30 and must be private as the ban on public gatherings is not raised until midnight Saturday, but friends may see her from 10 to 2 o'clock Saturday.  Rev. C.L. Sorg of the Evangelical Church will officiate.

Mrs. Jones, grandmother of Eleanor, and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Mills of Kansas City are here for the funeral.  The Evening Kansan-Republican, Newton Kansas.  Friday, November 1, 1918.  Page 1.
