Wilbur A. Schmitt
Wilbur A. Schmitt, 94, died Friday (May 29, 2009) at Asbury
Park in Newton. He was born on Sept. 30, 1914, in rural Moundridge to David H.
and Theresa C. (Koller) Schmitt. He graduated from Moundridge High School in
1932. On July 17, 1938, he married Velma Westerman at West Zion Church in
Moundridge. She preceded him in death on Nov. 19, 2006. Wilbur worked in the
sheet metal department at Boeing, Weins Construction Co. and Wedel Construction
Co. He was a skilled finish carpenter and always was willing to help friends
and family with building projects.
Wilbur was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and the
Double Duty Sunday School Class. He served as an usher and on the church's
winning bowling team for many years. He also enjoyed camping trips, pheasant
hunting, water skiing and fishing with his buddies.
Wilbur and Velma spent most of their married life in Newton,
living in the house Wilbur built. In 2002, they moved to Asbury Park, where he
remained until his death.
Survivors include daughter Connie and husband Robert Unruh;
son Larry and wife Carol Schmitt; grandchildren Taren and husband Rick Evans,
Jill and husband Jason Mathies, and Craig Schmitt; great-grandchildren Blake
and wife Christine Evans, Bryant and Hannah Evans, Brantlee, Bryce and Braden
Mathies, and Cash Myers; sisters, LaRue Taylor, and Kathryn and husband Rex
McCallister; sister-in-law Bertha Schmitt; 'son' Lee Grochowsky and wife Karen;
and many nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by his parents, an infant
daughter, Joan LaRue; brother Olin Schmitt; and twin sister Mildred Wann.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with family
present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moundridge Funeral Home in Moundridge.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Salem United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Sherry Clemons officiating.
Burial will be in Mound Township Cemetery in Moundridge.
Memorial contributions may be made to Asbury Park in care of
the funeral home.
