Millicent Frances (Dart) Claassen
Millicent Frances (Dart) Claassen, 95,
died Tuesday (May 1, 2007) at her home in Newton.
She was born on March 18, 1912, in
Newton to Charles M. and Delcie (Duvall) Dart. They preceded her in
death. On Oct. 29, 1931, she married Emil D. Claassen. He preceded
her in death in 1968. For 37 years, she was a business women and
partner with her husband. After his death, she continued with their
rural cattle and farming operation until she was no longer able to
climb on the tractor.
She believed in and supported Harvey
County 4-H programs: Fair Food Superintendent, Country Wide and Club
Food's Leader and Extension councils and boards.
She was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church where for many years, the congregation at the
church enjoyed meals that she planned and prepared. They particularly
liked her homemade rolls for each of those meals.
As a civic minded community volunteer,
she recognized community needs and championed solutions to meet those
needs. As a fundraiser, whether it was by foot, car or by phone, many
agencies throughout Newton were recipients of monies as a result of
her unrelenting financial campaign presentations.
The Newton Kansan selected her as
overall Women of the Year and the Newton Area Chamber of Commerce
chose her as its first woman Citizen of the Year, to honor her years
of dedicated service to this community.
