Esther S. (Martin) Funk
Esther S. (Martin) Funk, 82, died Saturday (May 2, 2009) at
her Newton residence. She was born on May 12, 1926, in Corn, Okla., to John L.
and Sarah (Wiens) Martin. They preceded her in death. On May 29, 1945, she
married Harry Roy Funk in Corn. He preceded her in death on April 24, 2009.
Esther was a longtime active member of First Church of the Nazarene in Newton.
She did the children's story hour at the church for many years. She was a
homemaker and a librarian for the Hillsboro Public Library.
Esther enjoyed sewing, cooking and sharing her creations
with family and friends. She also enjoyed gardening and spending time outside.
Family was very important to Esther, and she greatly looked
forward to spending time with her loving family and friends. Esther's
disability in walking did not keep her from keeping up with her family and
friends' activities. They always could expect a phone call or card from Esther
on their special days.
Survivors include son, Dewayne and Leona Funk of Clinton,
Okla.; daughter, Peggy and Dennis Voth of Calgary, Canada; daughter, Maxine
Kirkpatrick of Wichita; son, Kenneth Funk of Destrehan, La.; 10 grandchildren;
and eight great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by four brothers and five
sisters.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 to
11 a.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. The family will receive
friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Restlawn
Gardens of Memory in Newton.
Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Church of the
Nazarene, with Pastor Peggy Voth officiating. The family invites Esther's
friends to bring a handmade gift they received from Esther during the years to
be displayed at the church during the memorial service time. Also, come
prepared with a story to share with friends and family following the memorial
service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Harry Hynes Memorial
Hospice in care of the funeral home.
