George L. Goodwin
NEWTON — George L. Goodwin, 78, died on Monday (July 30,
2012) in Newton.
George was born on Oct. 20, 1933, in Swampscott, Mass., to
George and Frances (Messenger) Goodwin.
George was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, where
he served in the U.S. Navy. During his career, he was assigned to the U.S.S.
Franklin D. Roosevelt and the U.S.S. Shenandoah in Norfolk, Va. He was a Purple
Heart recipient and completed a career of 20 years of service.
In April 2009, George's wife, Shirley Goodwin died. This was
a difficult transition for George, and he sincerely looked forward to rejoining
her.
George is survived by four daughters, Debbie Cherry of
Pittsburg, Ruth (Kevin) Rose of Oceanside, Calif., Dani (Donald) Jones of
Pittsburg, and Kelly (Jeff) Taylor of Wichita; a son, Eddie (Delia) Goodwin of
Oceanside, Calif.; two brothers, Wayne (Sundee) Goodwin of Jamestown, Pa., and
Douglas Goodwin of Vinalhaven, Maine; 12 grandchildren; and numerous
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, George
and Frances Goodwin; wife, Shirley Irene Goodwin; a daughter, Joni Weber; and a
sister, Catherine Adams.
An inurnment will take place at Grandview Cemetery in
Neodesha at a future date.
