Leon R. Kliewer
Leon R. Kliewer, 63, retired owner of Buhler Agency, passed
into the loving arms of Jesus on Saturday (April 11, 2009).
He was born on May 1, 1945, in Henderson, Neb., the only
child of Cornelius C. 'Chris' and Marie Dick Kliewer.
After graduating from Henderson Community Schools in 1963,
he pursued a degree in economics and business administration at Bethel College
in North Newton. Graduating in 1967, he served for two years at Methodist
Youthville in Newton, fulfilling his alternative service requirements, and
began a career in banking, insurance and real estate. He served as a loan
officer at the Bank of Whitewater in Whitewater and Midland National Bank in
Newton. For the past 30-plus years, he was owner/operator of Buhler Agency, an
insurance and property management agency in Buhler.
On June 10, 1967, he a married Mary Mierau in Henderson. She
survives.
He was active in local Mennonite churches where he resided,
as a Sunday school teacher, church treasurer, various committees and boards,
Bethel College Alumni Association, Western District Conference Board of
Trustees, Buhler Chamber of Commerce officer and, for many years, the treasurer
of the Buhler 'Frolic' committee.
He also is survived by three sons and their families, David
L. DeHoogh-Kliewer, his wife, Michelle, and daughters, Hannah and Emma, all of
Sioux Falls, S.D.; Christopher C. Kliewer, his wife Cara, and daughters, Ava
and Vivian, all of Wichita; and Benjamin L. Kliewer of Wichita.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Buhler
Mortuary in Buhler, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
Graveside service will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Buhler East
Cemetery, with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. at First Mennonite
Church in Newton, with Pastor Clarence Rempel and Chaplain Amanda Rempel
conducting the services.
