Hazel Leona (Weyand) German
Hazel Leona (Weyand) German passed away Monday
(March 16, 2009) at Kidron Bethel Healthcare in North Newton.
She was born on Oct. 4, 1919, to Ernest and Agnes
(Loewen) Weyand. The fifth of eight children, Hazel was born on a homestead
near Chinook, Mont. The family returned to Kansas when Hazel was quite young
and moved to a farm near Lehigh. Hazel and her brothers and sisters had many
memories of the farm, the hard times and also the good times growing up
together.
Agnes Weyand passed away when Hazel was 17, and she
stayed home to help their father raise the younger brother and sisters. Hazel
was very proud of her contribution to the family and appreciated the gratitude
and thanks from her loved ones.
On Aug. 24, 1944, Hazel was united in marriage to
Henry O. German Jr. They made their home in Canton and Valley Center. Their
union was blessed with the birth of one daughter, Beth Marie.
Hazel was a member of The United Methodist Church of
Canton and then First United Methodist Church of Valley Center. She was very
active in her church and her Sunday school class, the Homebuilders.
Her passion for sewing was passed along through her
work with 4-H, and she became a sewing leader for many years. She was a member
of several clubs and organizations in Valley Center. As a member of the 'Busy
Bees,' she sang and performed at many nursing homes, retirement centers and
schools.
Hazel is survived by her daughter, Beth, and
son-in-law, David Spradling of Green Valley, Ariz.; sisters, Clara Schulz of
Hutchinson, Francis Sippel of Goessel, and Pearl Ediger of McPherson; brother,
Arnold Weyand of McPherson; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and
friends.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Ash
and Elda Fortner, and brother, Clarence Weyand.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at
Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at
Petersen Funeral Home Chapel in Newton, with Chaplain Amanda Rempel presiding.
Burial will follow at Canton Township Cemetery in
Canton.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association
in care of the funeral home.
