Marvin Harman Church

Marvin Harman Church, 91, passed away Sunday (Oct. 26, 2008) at Halstead Health and Rehabilitation in Halstead.


He was born Jan. 27, 1917, in rural Whitewater to Oscar and Sylvia (Harman) Church. They preceded him in death.

On Aug. 4, 1942, he married Ruby Sheffler in Newton. She preceded him in death on Oct. 26, 1989.

Martin served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He owned Church Engine Service for 50 years.

He raced cars, enjoyed camping, and was an avid fisherman and reader. He was a good dad and grandpa.

Survivors include daughters, Sherry Church of Hesston, Marvetta Church of Newton, and Dianne and Bob Hopkins of Rayville, Mo.; sister, Bonnie Vetter of Newton; grandson, Jim Hopkins of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; and great-granddaughters, Amber Hopkins and Hanna Hopkins, both of Excelsior Springs.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Vernice Church, and a grandson, Steve Hopkins.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with family greeting friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Restlawn Gardens of Memory in Newton, with Chaplain Mike Hambley of Hospice Care of Kansas officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Halstead Health and Rehabilitation in care of the funeral home.
