Dorothy P. Hermstein

Dorothy P. Hermstein, 97, of Hesston, died Thursday (Jan. 1, 2009) at Newton Medical Center in Newton. She was born Jan. 4, 1911, in rural Morris County to August and Margaret Frances (Chapman) Hermstein. They preceded her in death. She moved to Newton in 1939. Dorothy retired after 46 years of school teaching. She taught at Washington Elementary School in Newton for 36 of those years. Dorothy was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newton. She also was a member of the Newton Area Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma and the American Association of University Women.

Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her loving family and many friends.

Survivors include nephews, Harold Hermstein of Hesston, Marion Hermstein of Newton and Guy Hermstein of Council Grove; brother, A.H. 'Junior' Hermstein of Council Grove; and cousin, Marcella Hermstein of White City.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Petersen Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Chaplain Nancy Walker of Schowalter Villa Chapel in Hesston officiating.

Graveside committal service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery in Council Grove.

Memorial contributions may be made to Schowalter Villa in care of the funeral home.
