Russell E. Morton

Russell E. Morton, 76, died Wednesday (May 26, 2004) at Newton Medical Center. He was born April 9, 1928, to Russell Thomas and Minnie (Brumbaugh) Morton in Ottawa. They preceded him in death. He married Iris Dean Shaw June 6, 1948, in Ottawa. She survives of the home. He was known as "The Fiddle Man." He was a graduate of the former Appanoose High School in 1947. He worked as a construction and welding foreman for Western Resources Natural Gas Service for 27 years, retiring in

1990. In 1982, the Kansas Bluegrass Association elected him 'Mr. Bluegrass.' He was elected to the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame in 1993 for his 22 years of service as a sports official.

Other survivors include: four sons, David Morton and wife Linda and Roger Morton and wife Terri, all of Edmond, Okla., John Morton and wife Debbie of Mulvane and Michael Morton and wife Sharon of Newton; a daughter, Glenda Tieszen and husband Michael of Newton; a brother, Jimmy Morton of Ottawa; a sister, Dorothy Davis of Bethany; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by: two brothers, Forrest Morton and Homer Morton; and three sisters, Thelma Broers, Mary Collins and Eloise Morton.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p. m. Friday with family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p. m. at Petersen Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be 2 p. m Saturday at Columbus Avenue Church of Christ.

Burial will be in Restlawn Gardens of Memory in Newton.

Memorials have been established with the Old Main Street Church of Christ Building Fund in care of the funeral home.
