Obituary

Clifford E. Carroll, 81, died Friday (March 16, 2018) at Evergreen Community in Olathe.

He was born Jan. 12, 1937, in Willow Springs, Missouri, to John and Roxie (York) Carroll. He married Bridgette (Overton) Lee and together they had one child, Lorraine. He later married "his sweetheart," Ruth (Potterf) Carroll and they were blessed with 32 years of marriage. She preceded him in death. He later married Charlotte (Carlson) Gaskill-Carroll. She also preceded him in death.

Clifford served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958. He then worked as a machinist for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad from 1966-1993. Clifford was a devout Christian, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and helper to all who needed him. He was a member of First Church of God for many decades, and served his church faithfully.

Clifford was a sports enthusiast; he especially loved the St. Louis Cardinals and Missouri Tigers. In his younger days, he enjoyed playing and refereeing church league softball and volleyball. Later in life, he was an avid golfer and bowler, and made many special memories with friends over the years. He loved traveling, especially to attend the Carroll family reunions. He will be lovingly remembered for his kind and gentle nature, and deep love of God and family.

He is preceded in death by parents, John and Roxie Carroll; brothers, Richard (Maggie) Carroll and David Carroll; sister, Neta Owens; wife, Ruth Carroll; wife, Charlotte Carroll; daughter, Lorraine Rauch; stepdaughter, Barbara Allen; and grandson, Tyler Smith.

He is survived by his granddaughter, Amber (Michael) Randall of Kansas City; grandson, Hunter Smith of Newton; great-grandchildren: Jackson, Madison, Emerson Randall and Westyn Smith, stepdaughters, Pam Mayberry and Vicki (Russ) Johnson; stepsons, Jeff (Rachel) Gaskill and Ron (Roberta) McGlachlin; his brothers, Charles (Helen) Carroll of Willow Springs, Missouri, and John Wendell (Tammy) Carroll of Pampa, Texas; sisters, Shirley Custer of East Peoria, Illinois, and Helen (Wayne) Hoffman of Morton, Illinois; and many other loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday (March 23, 2018), with family present from 5 to 6 p.m. Graveside services and interment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday (March 24, 2018) at Restlawn Garden of Memories near Newton. Memorial service is immediately following at 11 a.m. at First Church of God, 620 Fairview Ave., Newton, KS 67114.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation (for Parkinson's Research) or First Church of God. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway St., Newton, KS 67114.
