Newton man hit, killed by
pizza delivery vehicle
A 76-year-old Newton man was
struck and killed by a pizza delivery driver Thursday night in northern Newton.
Donald Boserma, 6 Jasper Court, Newton, was struck by a Dodge Neon driven by
Ernest Charles Miller, 20, of Newton at about 6:18 p.m. Thursday in the 2300
block of Hesston Road. Boserma was walking north on Hesston Road and Miller was
northbound on Hesston Road when Miller's vehicle struck Boserma. Boserma was
unresponsive when officers arrived on the scene, Newton Police Chief Jim Daily
said.
Officers administered CPR
until Newton Fire/EMS arrived and were able to stabilize the victim for
transport to Via Christ Regional Medical Center-St. Francis campus.
Boserma died about 1:30 a.m.
at the hospital, Daily said.
Miller received injuries to
his hands and wrists in the accident and was taken to Newton Medical Center
where he was treated and later released.
Miller was delivering pizza
for Papa John's at the time of the accident.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is
working on a reconstruction of the accident, and the Newton Police Department
is collecting statements from witnesses, Daily said.
Speed does not seem to be a
factor in the accident, Daily said.
Boserma lived near where the
accident occurred and could have been walking to a nearby business or
restaurant.
However, the exact cause of
the accident is not yet known, Daily said.
Police do not know at this
time if Miller will face any charges due to the accident, Daily said.
The funeral for Boserma will
be at 3 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Newton.
